How does Garbanzo provide differentiation?

Differentiation is often broken down into four different areas, and Garbanzo can provide differentiation within many of them:

  1. Content
  2. Process
  3. Product
  4. Learning environment

CONTENT DIFFERENTIATION WITH GARBANZO:

  • Assign a different lesson than what you use in class, one that uses the same words or covers the same concepts to match student interests and/or is a better fit for your context.
  • Assign additional lessons for students who complete assignments quickly, for students who need or want more language exposure, or for deeper learning.
  • Garbanzo provides leveled content that is scaffolded to align with a learner’s proficiency. Students can choose stories and activities that match their language skills, from beginner to advanced levels. This ensures that all students, regardless of their proficiency, can engage with the material meaningfully.
  • Cultural and thematic variety to maintain engagement and motivation.
  • The stories in Garbanzo are written in comprehensible language, using high-frequency vocabulary and simple sentence structures that gradually increase in complexity. This allows students to build confidence and fluency without feeling overwhelmed, making the content accessible to all learners at different stages of language acquisition.

PROCESS DIFFERENTIATION WITH GARBANZO:

  • Garbanzo breaks down long texts into digestible segments that are easier for students to process and feel less intimidating.
  • Garbanzo uses processing questions for processing support during reading; something usually not available during independent reading.
  • Garbanzo provides listening as an option for students who are developing their reading comprehension skills or are still working to match the sounds of spoken Spanish to the written word.
  • Garbanzo allows students to move independently at their own pace through lessons, and with the Biblioteca feature there are choice reading options available if they finish assignments quickly.
  • Students can revisit content within a lesson as often as necessary and desired.
  • Garbanzo provides immediate feedback to help students understand their mistakes and improve without waiting for teacher intervention.

PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION WITH GARBANZO:

  • Instead of answering questions and writing short-answer responses, students select responses to questions from fixed sets of answers.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DIFFERENTIATION WITH GARBANZO:

  • Students can benefit from being able to engage with content in an individual, quiet environment when boisterous, whole-class activities are not preferred or appropriate.

Additionally, Garbanzo tracks each student’s progress, allowing both the students and teachers to gather data and monitor learning over time. The platform keeps a record of performance and time spent on tasks, enabling the teacher to see where the student may need further support. This data-driven approach supports differentiated instruction by identifying individual learning patterns and gaps.
